Donald Nicholson II has been the Managing Director of SEAF’s Central Asia Small Enterprise Fund since 2002. Before joining CASEF, Mr. Nicholson served asthe President of CARESBAC from 1990 to 1991. Mr. Nicholson’s experience with SEAF dates back to the organizations inception when it was affiliated with CARE.
Mr. Nicholson has lived in Central Asia since 1996. Starting in Almaty, Kazakhstan where he was advisor to the government on the privatization of the large state-owned enterprises, he then moved to Turkmenistan to do the same. In 1998 he was appointed president and CEO of the Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund, a USD 150 million private equity fund sponsored by the American government. In 2001, Mr. Nicholson was active in developing several private enterprises in which he continues to retain an interest. He has been a resident of Tashkent, Uzbekistan since 2008 and is also president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan.
As an investment banker, venture capitalist and entrepreneur, Mr. Nicholson has over forty five years of experience in the emerging markets of Latin America, Southeast Asia and the former Soviet Union. In the early 1980’s Mr. Nicholson was a director of Dillon Read & Company, following which he established his own investment boutique in New York City. From 1965 until 1980 he was Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of Adela Investment Company, which at the time, ranked as the largest private Investment Company in Latin America. Throughout his career Mr. Nicholson has been involved in starting more than two hundred businesses and has owned and operated his own businesses in Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica and Uzbekistan.
Mr. Nicholson is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and has done further studies at IMD in Switzerland. He speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese fluently and has a working understanding of Russian
