Sarah Alexander

Sarah Alexander is an emerging markets private investment professional with over two
decades of experience in the field. Currently affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, School
of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), she teaches graduate level courses on Private
Capital in Emerging Markets. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Heifer Foundation, a
$200 million endowment, where she chairs the Nominating Committee and is Vice-Chair of
the Investment Committee. She advises LPs, MDBs/DFIs and fund managers on emerging
markets PE strategies, including impact investing and impact-first investing.
Previously, Ms. Alexander served as Investment Committee Chair and Chief Investment
Officer at the Global Innovation Fund, an impact-first investor focused on using the power of
private investment to support impact entrepreneurs addressing global development and
poverty issues. Earlier in her career, she was a Managing Director with the Abraaj Group,
focused on thought leadership, strategic positioning, and stakeholder engagement. From
2004-2013, she was the Founding CEO of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association
(EMPEA – now known as the Global Private Capital Association). In the 2000s, she was a
direct PE investor in the emerging markets of Asia, working with one of the earliest PE/VC
funds in the region. She also worked for a decade focused on international economic policy
in the public sector, including at the World Bank Group, the U.S. Department of State and in
the U.S. Congress.
She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MA from Princeton University (School
of Public and International Affairs – previously known as the Woodrow Wilson School), and a
BA, Summa Cum Laude in history, from Emory University.
