George Zhang is a Managing Director of the SEAF Sichuan Small Investment Fund (SSIF), which invests in SMEs in China’s Sichuan province. George is responsible for originating, negotiating, executing and monitoring investment deals, and adding value to and structuring exits. He also provides technical assistance to SSIF portfolio companies, maintains relations with the government departments, manages the SSIF internal staff, and assists in fund marketing and communications. Before joining SEAF in 2004, George worked as Chief Representative for the investment branch of New York Life International in Southwest China, originating, analyzing and structuring infrastructure projects and direct investment. Similarly, in inland Sichuan, George served as Chief Representative and Senior Relationship Manager of Standard Chartered Bank, developing the nascent corporate banking, institutional banking, and derivatives products. George developed business resources during his time working at Sichuan Branch of the People’s Bank of China from 1989 to 1995. At the People’s Bank of China, he was the head of the foreign investment and banking business departments, approving businesses’ registration and certification, establishing foreign branches for the international companies, monitoring the influx of capital and overseeing the management of the assets and liabilities of commercial banks. George studied finance and accounting as a visiting scholar at Bentley College in Boston, Massachusetts, holds a M.A. in Economics from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China and holds a B.A. in English and Japanese from Sichuan College of Foreign Languages in China.
